Tattoo Healing Stages Most clients experience five stages of healing after getting a tattoo. Individual results may vary. Day 1 - Inflammation On the first day, you may notice redness and swelling. This is a normal part of the healing process as your body begins to heal the inked area. Day 2 to 3 - Ink, Plasma, and Blood Discharge During this period, some discharge of ink, plasma, and a little blood is normal. This indicates your body is clearing out excess fluids and starting to mend the skin. Day 4 to 6 - Dry, Tight Skin You may notice dry, tight skin and some flaking, which is a good sign that the tattoo is healing. Redness and soreness should also start to diminish. Day 7 to 14 - Itching and Scabbing Expect some itching and scabbing as the tattoo continues to heal. Avoid scratching or peeling the scabs to prevent damage to the design.
